Fogra PSObasic
PSObasic is a lower version, easier and lower cost of PSO, with only more than $10000 certification fee. It is treated as the stepping stone of PSO. The application procedure is simplified and passing requirements are lower as well. Highlights of PSObasic:
- Can be conducted by PSO Partner, External PSO Professional and In-house PSO Professional
- Not mandatory to have Partner or the Professional attending the audit, but need to manage the whole process and encourage to attend
- APTEC is now the organization to manage the PSO Professional. So all documents and press forms of PSObasic should be sent to APTEC. APTEC will deliver to Fogra for measurement and issuing report
- Validity: 2-year (including initial test and intermediate test)

Passing requirements:
- Only measure two color bars, 5 tint patches have to be passed in both color bars
- TVIs (10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 90%)
- Spread in midtone range
- Color value
- Solid color (CMYK)
- Paper white (informative)
- 3 press forms are evaluated out of 10 printed sheets. Average value of 3 press forms must be passed
Intermediate test
- Intermediate test conducted after one year of initial test, print shop/Professional sends some printed sheets of a real print job with a suitable print control strip or initial test form to APTEC
- APTEC will do rough measurement and submit report to Fogra
- Intermediate test is mandatory. However, if it’s a fail, the certificate still remains valid

Fogra PSO Certification – conformance with ISO 12647
The ProcessStandard Offset (PSO) was developed by Fogra in co-operation with the German Printing And Media Industries Federation (bvdm). It is the description of an industrially orientated and standardized procedure for the creation of print products. The PSO is in conformance with the international standardization series ISO 12647 and therefore internationally recognized.
By using PSO the quality of the production of a complete print product can be guaranteed, from data creation to the finished printing product. The PSO describes adequate testing devices and control methods by which the production process can be supervised, guided and proved. This includes measuring devices with spectral and densitometric settings, as well as suitable testing elements (for example test stripes). Furthermore, the PSO sets nominal values and tolerances for the print production that, relating to modern production materials, represents what is sensible and feasible. The goal is to ensure that the production process is as efficient as possible and at the same time to ensure that interim and final results show a predictable quality of colour.

The evaluation is accomplished by Fogra and German Printing And Media Industries Federation (bvdm). They also launch the certificate and a digital seal of approval that is valid for two years to certified printer.
Fogra PSO certified company is valid for two years.
Scope of Evaluation (Prepress + Press)
Prepress:
1. Color management: Need to understand correct Adobe setting and the usage of ICC profiling
2. Digital proof: Produce 6 sets of digital proof compliant to ISO 12647-7 according to two types of paper. 6 sets must be passed.
3. PDF: Create PDF/X and preflight PDF
4. Reproduce the printed color patch
5. Light evaluation
6. Platemaking: Demonstrate the platemaking process, stablise the platemaking process management, plate dot evaluation, usage of calibration curve in CTP RIP
Press:
1 Press audit by sheetfed and / or weboffset:
- Based on the target value and tolerance in PSO / ISO 12647-2, including color difference, TVI values, etc.
- OK sheet: Draw 10 pcs of samples, all must be passed
- Press sheet: Print 2000 pcs (non-stop), draw 5 samples for each 200 pcs, totally take 10 times, with 50 sets of samples in total.

Fogra PSO Professional
Fogra and APTEC join force to launch Fogra PSO Professional qualification specially to China market. A PSO Professional is a specialist of the printing industry who gained extensive knowledge about PSO and the PSO certification. He is enabled to prepare companies for the certification and / or give training. If he is associated to a PSO Partner (currently APTEC), he can also lead the onsite certification test.

Regions covered: Fogra PSO Professional qualification is only limited to China, including, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

Validity: Four years (Can be extended, if PSO Professional is active)

Criteria for renewal: External PSO Professional - conduct at least one PSO certification within 4 years; In-house PSO Professional - has worked for a PSO-certified print shop and participated in PSO certification in that company within 4 years

Each qualified Professional has to pay an administration fee of HK$7,000 for each 4-year

Professional means the single employee in a certain company only and cannot be transferred to other person in the company

APTEC’s role
• After External Professional has completed the test, all relevant sheets and documents shall be sent to APTEC. APTEC will check all documents of certification and then send to Fogra and bvdm for evaluation. Fogra will issue the certificate to the qualified printing company.
• APTEC will also serve as communication bridge between Fogra and Professional to translate and inform all Professionals for any update of Fogra PSO certification.
China Academy of Printing Technology (CAPT) and Advanced Printing Technology Center (APTEC) join force to organize the Fogra PSO Professional Training . This training targets to specialists, common basics like dampening solutions, pressure balancing, etc, will not be covered, it focus on how to implement the correct tone value curves and how to reach the desired solid tone colours, including the considerations of colour management in the certification procedure for meeting ISO 12647 standards.
